Many litters contain added fragrances, but what smells good to us can be harmful to your cat. That’s why we’ve decided to make a change. We’re committed to providing natural, unscented litters that block odor without the need for fragrances, ensuring a healthy feline environment.
“While scented litter is a very popular option with cat owners, it is not the best for the cat and the household. The choice for us is simple, we will only produce products that help improve the lives of cats. Our company is aligned with pets, not profit.”
— Dr. Bruce Elsey
As a veterinarian-owned brand, we’ve seen how scented litter can cause litter box avoidance and house-soiling, leading to cats being abused, abandoned and ultimately placed in shelters. For this reason, we’ve made the decision to discontinue all production of scented litter in order to align with our mission to help keep cats in loving homes by providing veterinarian formulated solutions that put feline health first.
Scented litters affect your cat’s ability to follow their natural instincts, which can cause unwanted stress and respiratory-related health issues. A common result of this stress is Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC). FIC is the leading cause of house soiling in most felines, as the condition causes inflammation in the bladder due to environmental stress. This can result in straining to urinate, frequent and painful urination, blood in the urine and urinating outside of the litter box.
Scented litter typically has artificial additives that help with odor control or emit fresh scents. This can include floral or citrus fragrances, as well as carbon, baking powders and other synthetic materials that can mask and absorb litter box odors. While some unscented litters can also contain odor-absorbing materials, scented litter is distinguished by its other added fragrances.
We encourage our customers to make the switch to Dr. Elsey’s Ultra litter, which contains the same ingredients without the moisture-activated scents. Ultra is a natural clumping clay cat litter free of perfumes, deodorants and fragrances, while still offering superior odor control in a product conducive to feline health.
Here’s the thing, all litter boxes will develop unpleasant odors if not regularly cleaned. The best way to control odor with unscented litter is to focus on proper litter box maintenance. Make sure to remove feces and urine clumps daily from the litter box and replace the litter entirely once a month. Additionally, washing the litter box with mild soap and warm water can help reduce lingering smells. Regular maintenance not only keeps the box fresh but also ensures a more pleasant environment for both you and your cat.
